What is Soft Water? Hard Water?
What is Soft Water? Hard Water?
The soft and hard water is determined by the amount of calcium and magnesium ions in the water. Water with high calcium and magnesium content is called as hard water; on the contrary, it is called as soft water. Consumer often asked how to know the content of calcium and magnesium in water? According to the data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), it is divided into the following four levels, mainly calculated by the total amount of minerals, magnesium and calcium in one liter of water:
Soft water: 0–60 mg total hardness in 1 liter of water.
Moderately soft water: 60–120 mg of total hardness in one liter of water.
Hard water: One liter of water contains 120–180 mg of total hardness.
Extremely hard water: One liter of water contains more than 180mg of total hardness.
Which is suitable for drinking? Soft water or Hard water?
Different area has different quality of water. Underground water is harder than tap water, some area had a extremely hard water that is more than 1000ppm. This water is not suitable for daily usage such as drinking or cooking. Drinking water should be between 50~150ppm, water quality in the range is safe for drinking.
How to test soft water or hard water?
The easiest way to check is boiled the drinking water to a boil and observes if there are any white color scale inside the kettle. If there is a lot of scale, is might be hard water; otherwise, it is soft water. Besides, you can buy a soft and hard water test reagent, sodium oxalate from a professional water purification store.
Add this small amount into water, stir it, and wait for about 5-10 minutes to observe whether the water quality is turbid. If it is milky white and turbid, it is hard water; otherwise, if water quality is relatively clear, it is soft water.
